One-way LSD: One-way limited slip differentials (LSD) are designed to minimize slip during acceleration, locking only when the vehicle is accelerating and utilizing ramp clutches to create locking force in that direction. This allows for easy maneuvers, such as parking, while maximizing traction during acceleration. They are particularly suitable for front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive front axles. The benefits of a one-way LSD include improved lap times and responsiveness to precise pedal control. Since it only functions during acceleration, it remains inactive while decelerating, preventing understeer often associated with two-way differentials.
1.5-way LSD: The 1.5-way LSD limits slip during both acceleration and deceleration, though the degree of slip differs in each direction. This type provides an LSD effect during engine braking while slowing down, making it more versatile than a one-way LSD. The 1.5-way differential locks fully in one direction and partially in the opposite, allowing for better control compared to a two-way differential, which fully locks in both directions. While drifters often prefer two-way LSDs, most racers tend to choose the 1.5-way LSD for its balance between acceleration and deceleration performance.
